Glossary

Here are some new words we found about watersheds you might want to know.

advocate - one that supports of promotes the interests of someone else

beautification - to make beautiful or add beauty to

culvert - a sewer or drain crossing under a road

carnivores - animals that only eat meat

decomposers - bacteria and fungi that eat dead plants and animals to break them down which makes them part of the soil and useful again

discharge - to empty

dissociated - to remove from association

encompass - to enclose or surround

erosion - when soil washes away by wind and water

fragmented- an incomplete or isolated portion

headwaters - place where creek begins

herbivores - animals that only plants

invasive plant - a non-native plant that takes up too much space that would be ordinarily used by native plants and animals

landfill - a wetland or body of water that has been filled in with dirt, rocks, or garbage so people can build things on top of it

native plant - a plant that is naturally found in an area instead of one that is brought and planted by people to that area

omnivores - animals that eat both plants and animals

pollution - chemicals or other things made by humans that harm the environment

propagation- multiplication by natural reproduction

predators - animals that eat other animals

producers - plants that make their own food using light energy from the Sun, carbon dioxide from the air and water from the soil

restoration - an act of caring or healing a natural area

riparian - living on the bank of a river or a body of water situated or dwelling on the bank of a river or body of water

silt - fine dirt

suppression - being stopped in a forceful way

urbanized- a city atmosphere; to make urban in nature

watershed - all the land from the ridges to the bay that drains into a creek or river
