Montclair Railroad Trail (a City of Oakland "linear park")
The Friends of Montclair Railroad Trail maintain and improve this paved, one-mile trail between Montclair Village and Shepherd Canyon. A former rail bed of the Sacramento Northern Railway, the area had been considered for a multi-lane freeway. That plan was cancelled in 1972 due to the new environmental impact law and community action. Beautiful stands of oak trees form a canopy along portions of the trail, and a variety of habitats can be seen along its length. Volunteers prune, remove invasive plants, plant natives, improve drainage, and add permanent improvements when possible. Workdays are the third Saturday of each month, 9-11 a.m. Email for more information.
