FOSC Project List

With funding and in-kind support from the City of Oakland (particularly former Councilmember Dick Spees, Parks & Rec, and the Watershed Improvement Program), the Friends of Sausal Creek built a native plant nursery on an underused site in Joaquin Miller Park.

As demand for locally native plant stock increases, the propagation and growing facilities continue to be expanded and updated. Our goal at the nursery is to produce quality local native plant stock for our watershed restoration efforts. We also hope to continue to supply local native plants to other creek and watershed groups in exchange for volunteer labor. FOSC staff and regular volunteers host (almost) weekly educational work programs in the nursery. No experience is necessary to join in the pleasures of plant propagation. We welcome all who wish to come and help out. In addition to growing for our own projects, the nursery has grown plants for:
  • Arroyo Viejo Creek
  • Peralta Creek
  • Glen Echo Creek, and
  • numerous school gardens.

Volunteer Activities
The Friends work at the nursery on about 3 out of every 4 Saturdays; call 501-FOSC first on holiday weekends to double-check.

JMP NurseryWork at the nursery includes, of course, lots of plant propagation such as sowing seeds and transplanting. Volunteers spend time watering, moving plants, weeding, pruning and seed collecting. Additionally, we can use help with projects such as construction work, irrigation installment and creation of educational materials and signs. Volunteers learn about the propagation, care and use of native plants as well as about the diverse ecological communities present in the watershed. Download a flyer on volunteering at the nursery.

Native Plant Sale

Once a year we host a native plant sale and nursery stock can be purchased by the public. Proceeds from the sale are used to support nursery operations. Click here for information on the next native plant sale and open house.
Needs

The Nursery is in need of some basic supplies. Click here for the Nursery Needs list. If you can donate any of these items, please email the Field Coordinator.
Seed Collecting

Description: Seed collecting involves hiking through the watershed in search of ripe seeds and new plant locations. We also spend time organizing, seed gathering processing and recording the seeds that we collect. Generally we meet as a group every other Friday, but we also need folks to go collecting at other times. This is a great opportunity to learn more about your ecological communities and native plants.

Skills: No experience necessary, but since we need to train you, we ask that you commit to seed collecting on a regular basis. If you already know your natives, we can use any amount of time that you have to offer.
